Finite Element Analysis Simulation of Machine Tools with Integrated Drive Control

Complex mechatronic systems like machine tools are characterised by a close interdependence of physical domains (electrical and mechanical hardware) and logical domains (information processing devices). A novel simulation method, implemented in ANSYS control toolbox links those domains in the finite element software. Preliminary trials qualified this approach to be suitable in the design process loop for medium-sized machine tool manufacturers with restricted resources for modelling and simulation of their products. Mechatronic simulation results are the reference frequency response, the positioning behaviour of feed axes, as well as the compliance frequency response between tools and work pieces. With these results, design improvements can be made leading to higher customer satisfaction regarding efficient and high-quality manufactured work pieces.
